DataFish®

DataFish® is North Sea System’s metocean survey buoy for high flow marine environments.

By providing real time data and undertaking long duration, multi-application surveys, the system reduces the risk and cost of metocean data collection.  DataFish® is the only system able to provide real time data from tidal energy sites.

Key Features

  • Customisable, multi-instrument platform
  • Real-time data transmission
  • ADCP flow monitoring
  • Acoustic monitoring
  • Wind and atmospheric data
  • Wave measurements
  • Surface and subsea video images
  • GPS locator
  • On-board power generation

Customisable Platform

Using mountings on the anchor and mooring, instrumentation can be positioned at any depth allowing a range of metocean data to be collected.  These instruments include:

  • ADCP – to measure flow profiles.
  • Heave sensor – to provide wave heights.
  • GPS – to provide location data.
  • Hydrophone – to measure subsea acoustics & PAM.
  • Cameras – to provide live images.
Graphs illustrate flow profile, speed proportion, and direction time proportion. Wind speed and underwater sound profile are also displayed. Survey Summary: Yarmouth, 50°42.56'N 1°31.01'W, 9 Mar-6 Apr 2013. Days so far: 15, Days remaining: 13. "Download data" link provided.
A bar chart shows wind speed in knots against hours. Bars indicate durations: 0-5 knots, up to 30+ knots, with colors differentiating ranges—gray, orange, and red, titled "Wind speed."
A yellow buoy labeled "DataFish" and "North Sea Systems" floats in the ocean near rocky shores. A lighthouse is visible in the background under a partly cloudy sky.

Acoustic Monitoring

DataFish® can be configured for acoustic monitoring, enabling developers to assess the acoustic output of marine turbines, vessel noise and marine mammal presence.  This capability supports consenting for renewable projects and enables works to be optimised to the environment.

Safely and accurately deployed

Lost equipment, failed deployments and poor quality data in highly energetic environments is a common concern for developers in the marine energy industry.  DataFish® is designed to overcome these challenges.
